Neville was walking down
the hall and looking down at his schedule, which he hadn't quite memorized yet.
He had just finished his Muggle Studies class and saw that he didn't have
another class to go to for an hour or so. He was heading back to the Gryffindor
common room when he remembered what he had been hearing from people all day.
Ginny was in the hospital wing! He stopped in his tracks and turned back around
and headed in that direction.
When he reached the hospital wing, he peered inside to see if Ginny was asleep.
She seemed to be awake, but he couldn't really tell.
"Ginny," he
whispered. "Are you awake and in the mood for a visitor?"
Brought to earth from a mental tangent by the
sound of sound of Neville's voice, Ginny smiled and sat up on her bed, waving
Neville in. "If the visitor is you, sure," she replied.
Neville walked over to Ginny's bed and pulled up
a chair next to her. Before sitting down, he dug deep into the pockets of his
robes pulled out some chocolate frogs left over from the train ride.
"I'm sorry I didn't think to bring you anything," he told her,
"but my gran always says that you should never visit someone at a hospital
empty handed, so here."
He placed the chocolate frogs on the table next to her bed and then sat down.
"Oh, don't worry about it," Ginny
replied, dismissing his apology, before smiling at his offering, "Thank
you, they're perfect! I was just feeling in the mood for chocolate frogs,"
she added honestly, turning to face him. "How's being head boy
going?"
"Well, I haven't really had much of a
chance to use my position. Everyone is behaving so far, but you know how it
goes. After the first week, they all go back to being themselves and needing
some discipline. I just hope people actually listen to me. I'm kind of a softy,
and I think that makes people feel like they can walk all over me. I guess only
time will tell if it's true."
Neville realized he was talking about himself too much and quickly changed the
subject.
"What I'm more concerned about right now is you. Are you feeling okay?
What happened?"
"I'm sure they'll realize pretty soon that
you're a lot stronger than they give you credit for. I mean, you were down
there with us in the Department of Mysteries fighting Death Eaters, and that
took some serious courage. You'll do great," Ginny replied, smiling
pleasantly, "Oh, right. Well, it still hurts like hell, but I'm sure it'll
heal all right. As far as Madame Pomfrey can tell, it's just a regular burn.
What happened? I had confiscated some clay that was behaving strangely,
spitting, sparking, that sort of thing, and when I tried to take it to
McGonagall, it exploded in my bag, and burned my arm," she finished,
showing him her heavily bandaged forearm.
"Thanks for having confidence in me,"
Neville said to her. "It really means a lot."
He looked at her bandaged arm as she told him how she injured it.
"Who did you confiscate that stuff
from?" he asked her. "Whoever it was should get detention. You know,
I can arrange to do that for you. It can be my first act as Head Boy. Just tell
me who it was and it's done."
"It's no problem," Ginny replied,
"I'm sure I'm not the only one who knows you can do it, Neville. You'll do
a great job." She shrugged apologetically at Neville, realizing that she
actually didn't know who the kid was. She'd been in such a hurry to get to
class that she hadn't even bothered to ask. "I don't know, some 4th year
with dark hair and red trainers. I'd know him if I saw him."
"Well I'll be on the look out for him. And
if I do catch him, I will march him straight over here to give you an
apology," Neville said angrily. "What was he doing with something so
explosive anyway?" he mumbled and shook his head.
Hermione walked into the Hospital Wing to find
Ginny and Neville talking.
"I really hope you don’t mind me showing up" Hermione said as she
walked into the Hospital Wing slowly "I felt horrible that I didn’t visit
you last night, Ginny, but I was so tired already from cleaning and then I went
to the courtyard to listen to Luca play as I promised, and by the time I had
left, it was almost curfew." she walked up to Neville’s chair, and put her
hand on his shoulder. "I see you
already have a visitor, but I just wanted to give you this." Hermione said
as she took her free hand out of her pocket and gave Ginny a bag filled with
the remaining pieces of the mysterious exploding clay. "I figured you
might want to keep it as a memory." Hermione laughed "I’m just kidding about that part, but
you might want to have someone check it out." She felt as though she was intruding. "I’ll come back to speak to you later, Gin. See you,"
she said as she walked out of the room off to her next class.
Neville looked over at the table next to Ginny's bed and saw a tray with an
empty plate on it. He had no idea what kind of food had been on the plate, but
the remnants of food that were left did not look very appetizing.
"Ginny, are they feeding you good stuff over here, or is it tasteless like
the crap they feed my parents at St. Mungo's? Because I can get you some real
food if you'd like."
"Thanks," Ginny replied with a smile,
"No idea. He said it wasn't his, and that he didn't know what it did, but
I don't think I believe him." She gave a little laugh, "Tasteless
crap, actually. Which is funny, since most of the food here is so good. I
suppose there's some sort of international hospital standard that governs the
food standards and judges whether or not it's crappy enough. But as for
bringing me something, would you? I mean, would you mind? You don't have to if
it would be an inconvenience, but I'd appreciate it."
"No, it's not an inconvenience at all,
Ginny," Neville told her. "I'll bring you anything you want. I'll
even go to the kitchen right now and get you something if you'd like. Just tell
me what you want."
Ginny shrugged, not really sure, "Some
soup, or some chicken would be good. As long as the chicken is properly
colored, and not gray like the chicken here tends to be. Thank you very much,
by the way."
"No problem!" he said before heading
out the door.
He had never been to the kitchen before but had once overheard the twins
talking about getting in by tickling the pear in the fruit painting.
Ten minutes later, he was back at Ginny's
bedside with a bag full of food.
"Have you seen that kitchen? It's amazing
down there! And the elves cook so fast!"
He started emptying out the contents of the bag.
"Here's your soup," he said, pulling
out a small bowl with a lid on it, "and your chicken, and I had them make
you some potatoes as well, and some pumpkin pie for dessert."
Ginny grinned, accepting the food Neville had
brought, "Wow, thanks!" she exclaimed, "Pumpkin pie, too? This
looks amazing, thank you! I have been down there, actually. Once or twice when
I missed dinner."
"I am sure your brothers were the ones who
showed you where it is and how to get in. They are the only reason why I knew
how to myself," Neville told her. "I overheard them talking about it
once."
"Yeah, it was Fred and George who told me.
Told me how to get there and how to get in, and it's been good to know.”
He watched her eat her soup for a few moments before speaking again. "So, when do you think Madam Pomfrey is
going to let you out of here?"
Ginny shrugged. "Not sure, but she definitely wants to keep me over night
tonight, and tomorrow, we'll see."
"Well, I hope you get out of here as soon
as possible," he told her. "Meal times aren't the same without you
sitting with all of us. And besides, it can't be good that the term just
started and you're already missing your classes. What are you taking
anyway?"
"I'd like to be out as soon as possible,
too. It's dreadfully dull in here, and I like to be able to see my friends
whenever I want to. And thank you," Ginny smiled and nodded in agreement,
"Missing class this early in the year is awful, really. I'm taking
Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, Herbology,
Arithmancy and Muggle Studies."
"You and I are taking a lot of the same
subjects," Neville said to her. "I am also taking DADA, Charms,
Herbology and Muggle Studies. If you'd like, I can ask the professors to give
me your assignments to bring to you so that you don't fall too far behind. And
as for this place being dull, I can always bring you something to occupy your
time. A book or a game perhaps?"
"Would you really? Would it be too much
trouble? That's really sweet of you. But I don't want to be a burden,"
Ginny replied, smiling at Neville, "A book would be really lovely, but
again, only if it isn’t too much trouble. I can live with being bored, I
imagine there are some people who have to do it more often than I do."
"Ginny, you are not a burden," said
Neville in a serious tone. "You are important to me, and I don't mind
doing this for you at all. You would do the same for me, right? Now, which book
would you like? I can check it out of the library and bring it to you before my
next class."
"Well of course I would do the same for
you, I just didn't want to be any trouble for you when I know you already have
so many responsibilities as Head Boy and a seventh year. I care about you too,
and I really appreciate all of this. If they library has it, I'd like Pride and
Prejudice, by Jane Austen. I haven't read it in ages."
"Yeah, well, I haven't lost Trevor yet, and
Malfoy isn't here to put any hexes or curses on me like he usually does, so I
have some free time on my hands," he joked, although what he said was
perfectly true.
Ginny gave a nervous laugh when Neville
mentioned Malfoy hexing and cursing people and causing general trouble for
Neville, "Well, I'm glad you've been able to keep track of Trevor, and I'm
glad Malfoy hasn't been any trouble. Even if it's only because he hasn't been
here.”
"I will be right back with your
book." And he headed out to the
library.
“Alright, see you in a moment."
Neville quickly made his way to the library,
asked Madam Pince to help him find the book Ginny had requested, and then
dashed back to the hospital wing.
"Here you go, Ginny," said Neville, handing her the book. "I
have to go to class now, but if there's anything else you need, just send me an
owl or send someone to get me, okay? I'm serious, anything at all."
"Alright, if you're sure. Thank you so
much!" Ginny replied, running her finger along the leather binding of the
book.
"Anytime," he said. "I better get
to class. I don't want to be late."
He quickly headed for the door, but turned around to look at Ginny
before exiting.
"You take care of yourself, alright? I'll be back later tonight or
tomorrow to check on you and to give you your assignments. Bye!"
