When Draco got home,
he put the capers away, and went down to Snape's lab and banged on the door.
Severus was yet again "resting his
eyes", which he seemed to do quite often these days now that he had no
students to torture, essays to spill red ink over, or halls to stalk.
He "woke" with a jolt when he heard the loud banging on his chamber
door. A scowl spread across his features, and he flew to the door, flinging it
open. "Yes?" he said icily. He studied Draco for a moment and decided
he wouldn't want to talk about it in the hall. He moved over, and allowed him
entrance.
Draco stepped inside and waited for Snape to close
the door. "You told her your real name?" Draco said, letting the tone
of the question say Have you gone mad?.
"She thinks it's my last name. How could I
possibly withstand Samuel," he sneered.
He folded his arms and stared down at Draco, noticing the growth spurt Draco
had endured over the past year. "Did you tell her that if she values her pathetic
life... to stop visiting us?" He asked this calmly, letting the
sneer drop from his features. There was no point arguing. All I can give
Draco are empty threats anyways, or threats to kill the girl. But that won't
do.
"Basically," Draco said. "But
that's isn't the point. Drake Herring and his Uncle Samuel is not going to
raise any eyebrows if it floats back to the ministry. Drake and his Uncle
Severus might. Severus is not a common Muggle name."
Snape’s brows furrowed. The boy had him there....
what had even possessed him to give her his real name? "The girl is too
frightened to tell anyone," he decided, not altogether convincing himself
that it was anywhere near the truth. "As long as we aren't suspicious...
she'll have no reason to phone the authorities," he said calmly.
Draco would have laughed if he had been in a
better mood. Instead he just bit back a sigh. "She's not frightened in the
least. She still wants you to come to dinner. And I'm not worried about her
calling the police, but gossip travels faster than light in this town. And
everyone has relatives out of town, who might be related to a mudblood
or a halfblood. And we're wanted." Draco let out another sigh, and sank
into a chair. "Not that that's our biggest problem." He proceeded to
tell Snape about his morning meeting with Voldemort.
"Did he seem pleased when you left?"
Severus enquired. It was unusual for the Dark Lord to call upon a Death Eater
during daylight, even in his own home. "Was there anything special about
the bracelet earlier?"
"Extremely pleased," Draco said, trying
not to sound too grim. "Mother, Pansy, and I could all tell it held some
potent magic, but we hadn't had a chance to have it examined yet. Do you...do
you think it's possible that it could have been his horcrux?"
"Possibly," he took in a breath, and
continued, " I do not think the Dark Lord would be pleased to learn one of
his horcrux's was no longer where he originally put it..." Severus began
to pace "Unless he was relieved to find it at all,"
"Well, I think..." Draco began, and
stopped when what Snape had said hit him. "One of" he repeated
getting to his feet. "You mean there's more than one?"
Severus hadn't realized what he'd said, and went
to correct himself until he realized what Draco was saying. "That's
entirely possible I suppose... no wizard has ever been known to do so
though,"
Draco fought down the panic that was rising inside
of him. Destroying one horcrux had seemed possible, but finding an unknown
number of them... "He's said he's gone further down the path of
immortality than anyone..."
Severus felt no need to comment further and sat in
his favorite chair. He pondered how to approach such a delicate situation.
After a few minutes, and many discarded ideas he finally thought of something
for Draco to put his efforts into. "Maybe you should ask if the Dark Lord
knows about Horocruxes," he studied Draco's face, and continued, "He
might enjoy passing his knowledge onto a young and eager Death Eater..."
he said unconvincingly.
Draco was startled by this suggestion, but there
was a certain logic to it. "I told him I was interested in
immortality," Draco said.
"Well then he won't find it too
unusual," he said calmly.
Draco nodded. It had been one thing to play these
games with Snape and his father, even Bella, but the Dark Lord...that would be
the real test.
Draco put his thumb to his lips thoughtfully. "Sir, why did you tell him
that I had killed?"
"So he wouldn't think you were weak,"
Severus replied without looking at the boy, the kettle had come flying from the
kitchen to poor him a cup of tea, and the last thing he needed was a lap full
of boiling water.
Draco nodded and admired the floor. "Do you
think I'm weak?"
Severus considered the question, "... No...
Voldemort might consider you weak in some of the aspects he considers
important. But none of that matters Draco," he paused and took a sip of
his tea. "Only what you decide is important is what matters," Severus
noted how he was rambling, and showing a tiny bit of his soft side and
immediately closed up again. He sat back in his chair, crossed his legs, and
drank his tea, leaving Draco to think on what he'd said in silence.
Draco was not sure exactly what Snape meant, but
he understood the "no". That was enough.
