Lacy
Pembrooke made her way across the front lawn of the Riddle House. She couldn't
help but creep slightly. She felt a little guilty venturing back here so soon
after her last intrusion, but hoped that Drake wouldn't mind since she was
bringing him a wireless radio, something he had mentioned wanting back when she
had drug him out to hang with her friends. She figured it was the least she
could do for him since it had been pretty obvious that she had come at a bad
time on her last visit. Ever since then her thoughts had been on the mysterious
dark man and the way in which he'd almost scowled at her, as well as Drake's
handsome father and the fact that he had actually been alive all this time. It
had still seemed rather odd to Lacy that Drake didn't really appear to be as
thrilled about it as she would have been if her parents were to suddenly appear
from the grave.
She kept the parcel tucked under her right arm as she walked. It was wrapped in
newspaper for want of wrapping paper. She had meant to give it to him at the
grocery store, but he hadn't been lately and she wasn't exactly the most
patient person.
Draco sat in the caretakers shed
with his open chemistry books, bottles of liquids and boxes of powders that
promised to do impressive things if mixed properly. He glanced up and saw
someone walking across the lawn. He stood to investigate more closely and swore
under his breath when he saw who it was.
Draco ran out of the shed. "Lacy!" he hissed loudly and tried to get
her attention before she reached the door.
Lacy stopped and turned to look in
the direction the voice had come from. "Huh...? OH! Drake! Hi!" she
smiled cheerily and began walking toward him.
"What are you doing
here?" he demanded quietly and motioned for her to move more quickly. He
grabbed her arm the moment she was in reach and half-dragged, half-shoved her
into the shed.
Lacy giggled slightly. Being
shoved into a shed by a cute boy wasn't exactly the worst thing ever. She had
to stop herself though. Drake just didn't seem the type. Once she was inside
she let her eyes focus on the shed's contents, before turning her attention
back to him.
"Came to give you this!" she grinned and pushed the object into his
arms.
Draco closed the door behind them,
searching the lawn for anyone else before turning to Lacy. The moment he did
she shoved a newspaper wrapped package into this arms. "What is it?"
he asked, eyeing the package uncertainly.
"Open it, silly!" she
half sighed.
"You act like no one's ever given you a present before. Don't worry... it
doesn't bite." she teased.
Draco tore off the newspaper,
still looking uncertain, but curious despite himself. His birthday had gotten
lost in the shuffle this year, and he did like getting presents.
The newspaper fell away to reveal a Muggle wireless. "And this is for
me?" he said. He had been considering trying to buy one of these but had
not gotten around to it. It seemed too good to be true to suddenly have one
handed to him. He felt like there had to be a catch.
"Of course! Drake you're positively
mental sometimes!" she laughed. "You said you wanted one... and
they're not exactly expensive, so don't worry about it! I have it set already
to that station I was listening to the other day in the store. It's probably one
of the only good ones."
Lacy realized she was rambling again and trailed off, glancing again and her
surroundings. "Uhm... why are we in a shed?" she asked finally, and couldn’t
help but allow a wry smile to creep across her face.
"I'm trying some chemistry
experiments," he mumbled, looking at the wireless rather than her. He
walked over to the table trance-like and sat back down on the bench, where he
had been working before. He put the wireless down on the table and tapped it
experimentally. "How does it work?"
"You've.... never used
one?" Lacy's mind was completely boggled. She came over to where he was
sitting and leaned over him. "Like this." She switched the power on
and immediately the radio began to play. Luckily she had remembered to put in
batteries before she gave it to him. "See... this is where you change it
from AM to FM... and this knob right here lets you go from channel to
channel."
Lacy sat down beside him and couldn't help but let her arm remain against his
as she sat. "You sure you've never used one of these before?"
"Sure, I've used one,"
Draco said, playing with the knobs. "I just haven't used this one."
His hands found the volume control turning it up little too loud before getting
it under control. "So how many stations are there?" The wizard
wireless was only one.
"Uh... I don't know really...
it depends on where you are. I mean I can pick up some of the better ones in
the larger towns, but here... There's probably around 8... but only 3 good
enough to listen to." As she was explaining, the radio wafted its tune
into the air surrounding them.
The Boss says, "Come here boy. There ain't nothin' for free."
Another doctor's bill, a lawyer's bill,
Another cute cheap thrill
You know you love him if you put him in your will but...
Who will save your souls when it comes to the flowers now
Who will save your souls after all the lies that you told, boy
Who will save your souls if you won't save your own?
Lacy realized she was being pretty opinionated about this whole radio thing,
but it didn't really give her pause. She was being nice. The only one she ever
really wasted time on was the one she had pre-set the radio to.
Snape heard a static noise
drifting over the yard. Curious, he stalked towards the source.
He spotted the shed, and noted
that the door was open. As he got closer, he heard voices speaking. He saw
flashes of blonde from the window and knew it was Draco... or... well... one of
the Malfoys anyways.
He slowed his pace and breathing and began to listen to the conversation he was
about to break up. He knew that girl’s voice somewhere... but where. He
couldn't place it, and decided enough was enough when he heard the horrible Muggle
singer croaking over the radio.
"Draco..." he said smoothly as he made his appearance at the doorway.
He spotted the girl beside him and realized it was the Muggle girl that was at
the house earlier. Doesn't give up... does she? he smirked inwardly and
gave her a curt nod.
Lacy's expression immediately
brightened when the dark man made his entrance, only to fall again when she
remember that he had been the one who had scowled at her. She blinked a bit and
looked down at the table a moment before summoning the courage to look up at
him again and make eye contact, if that was even possible.
"Nice to see you again." she said primly, and only smiled normally,
holding back her usual goofy grin. She assumed that this was Drake's uncle, but
realized that he had called Drake, 'Draco.' Why hadn't he corrected her before?
"It's Drake," Draco
corrected him, getting to his feet. He wasn't sure what else to do or say, so
he just watched Snape with a bland expression.
Snape was impressed with the girl’s
courage to look him in the eye. Not often could people stand being around him
let alone look at him.
He gave her an eyebrow raise at her small chat only to have his attention taken
by Draco. What's this nonsense about Drake?
After awkward silence between the three, Severus decided it was time to know
what was up. "Almost time to leave... Drake."
Draco figured he was probably in
trouble either way, so he decided to have just a bit of fun with it.
"Is it?" he said dryly. "I guess I lost track of time. Lacy,
this my Uncle Samuel."
Lacy stood up quickly from the
bench and half nodded half bowed to Drake's uncle. "Pleased to make your acquaintance."
she said a little too formally.
"I'm really sorry about barging in like that the other day. I hope I
didn't interrupt anything too important."
"Nothing your apology can
fix," he sneered.
Lacy blinked slightly, the snide
tone of his comment caught her completely off guard.
"Well.. in that case..." she sat back down, but didn't take her eyes
off of his. She was hoping Drake would say something... praying he would say
something.
Draco didn't know what to say at
first. Part of him wanted to snicker at Snape's comment. Another part was still
cooing over his new wireless.
"Is um...is grandfather resting? Do you think it's time for Lacy to
go?" He opened part of his mind to Snape, hoping he would see the thought.
Is anyone else out, can she leave without being seen?
Severus felt someone else’s
presence hovering near his mind. He connected it and heard Draco's question. Bella
is holding a meeting in the living room. So at the moment, yes it's safe.
"Yes, I do," he answered dully. He ignored the first question
purposefully, hoping Lacy would realize what a greasy git he was in giving his
"nephew" no respect.
Lacy kept blinking, the craziness
of it all overwhelming and exciting her at the same time. Men just weren't like
this normally. Not around her. They'd gush and fall all over themselves just to
make her happy. It sickened her. This though... THIS was something. She
couldn't help but grin.
"Well okay then..." she said cheerily, standing up again. "I
guess I'll be leaving." She made her way around the table and glanced back
at Drake. "Love the secret base too." For that one she felt guilty,
but only slightly.
"Enjoy your wireless" she grinned and stopped when she was directly
in front of Drake's uncle. She smiled up at him. Then proceeded past him out
the shed's door.
Draco watched Snape while Lacy
left. When Snape's head had turned, he tried to slip the wireless out of sight,
but Lacey's comment made him abandon the effort.
He remembered that Snape had not explained his reason for coming to the shed.
"Did you need me for something?"
"I heard music, and I thought
your Muggle... friend-" he said with particular distaste, "might be
here." He smirked and added, "That needs to be broken up...Drake.
Don't want her getting too-" he searched for the right word,
"comfortable."
Draco fought back a groan.
"She's not my friend. She's more like my stalker."
Snape scoffed and swept off
towards the house.
Draco just stood there for a
moment stunned at Snape's abrupt departure and the brevity of the lecture. He
considered following him but was quickly distracted by his new wireless. Snape
had seen it and not said anything so that must mean that Draco was allowed to
keep it.
He closed the door to the shed, turned it on carefully so it played softly, and
went back to his homemade chemistry set.
