Promise gazed up at the Hogwarts Castle, startled at its size. She'd heard that it was positively massive from her mother, who had attended there before moving to the US, but she hadn't been prepared for it being THAT huge.

She smiled at the large man who led her toward the castle. What was his name again? Hagrid! that was it! Very nice man, seemed a little dull at times but that could be forgiven due to his wonderful temperment. After he'd spent several minutes cooing and exclaiming over her rather unusual pet, Charm (A little black cat with wings and blue eyes).  He'd begun to bring her to their destination.

Hagrid was carrying her things for her like a gentleman and she had to admit that she wasn't upset about it at all. She wasn't used to having things carried for her and she quite liked it. It made her feel like a lady.

They entered the castle into a large room that Hagrid called the great hall. It was an enormous room and Promise felt slightly overwhelmed but she said nothing as Hagrid led her on. Charm was curled around her neck quietly and not stirring. Promise didn't look but she had the feeling that her little pet was fast asleep.

Continuing their walk Hagrid finally broke the silence, "So ya comin' in early, eh?"

Promise smiled at the obviousness of what he'd just asked but answered as if it wasn't so, "Yes. My mom decided that she wanted to send me early to give me time to 'get used to things' like moving staircases and whatnot. She said that she 'doesn't want me being late for classes for any reason.'"

Hagrid grinned, "Well I guess it does take a bit o' gettin used to." He pulled a scrap of paper from his pocket then put it back in, "Says you're bein' put in the Gryffindor dormitories. Got sorted already, did ya?"

"Actually, no." Promise said thoughtfully, "I begged to not be sorted right away at all. It took a bit of convincing but they finally agreed. Gryffindor was just the dormitory they decided to stick me in."

Hagrid looked startled, "But why?"

"Well I'd heard that there were some terrible rivalries between some of the houses. I didn't want that to keep me from making friends in all four of the houses so I asked to be allowed time to get to know people from them all before being officially sorted. Now that I think about it, staying in Gryffindor and all, it will probably seem like I'm in that house and the Slytherin folk won't be too keen on being friends with me ANYWAY. Even though I won't be sorted...so perhaps it's a wasted effort but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. I think I'm going to be sorted some time around halloween." Promise replied. She noticed that they'd been climbing for quite some time and wrinkled her nose, "Where is the entrance to this common room again?"

"Seventh floor," Hagrid replied.

Promise looked crestfallen, "You've got to be effing kidding me....I suppose there's not an elevator either. Teach me to be a lazy American," She muttered irritably to herself low enough that Hagrid couldn't really hear her.

Charm sneezed and Promise looked down at her pet who looked relatively amused that her mistress was going to have to climb so much to get to her dormitory. Promise felt a little embarrassed at her laziness and stopped muttering, it would be good for her.

After what seemed like forever they reached a large portrait of an only slightly smaller woman. She looked bored and was fiddling with the hem of her dress idly.

"Now this, here, be the door to yer common room. To get in you gotta say a password, an' it changes from time to time. Right now it's 'Catawampus'. Try it out," Hagrid said.

Promise paused and pointed to the fat lady, "Say it to her?"

Hagrid nodded.

"Alright," Promise turned to the fat lady, "Catawampus."

The fat lady smiled brightly at her and swung open revealing the comfortable and charming looking Gryffindor common room.

"Oh that's cool!" Promise beamed brightly.

Hagrid set her things down next to a stairway inside of the room, "This is the way to yer dormitory. I can't bring yer things any further than this cuz boys aren't allowed up there." Hagrid said.

Promise smiled, "That's alright, Charm and I can manage from here." Charm peeped in agreement, a sound halfway between a cat's meow and a bird's chirp.

Hagrid looked pleased.  "Lovely. I need to be on me way now. I suppose they told ya the forest and the likes are forbidden?"

Promise nodded.

"Alright, I'll be seein' ya, Miss Promise and Miss Charm. Feel free ter drop by if ye have any questions."

With a few more words Hagrid was gone and the door to the common room swung shut.

Promise felt very lonely quite suddenly and cursed the fact that school didn't start until September 1st...the day before her birthday.

She sighed, "Well Charm, I guess we should start hauling all of this junk up."

She pulled out her wand (8" ebony, inflexible, phoenix feather) and began to get started.
