As though drawn there by magic, Draco found himself once again pounding on Severus Snape's door. It was like all the thoughts in his head had been shaken up, and he would explode if they didn't come out.

Snape was bent over a lab table carefully slicing buffalo tongue when a sharp crack on his door made him lose his steady and chop part of it uneven. He stood up, pushing his chair out with his calves, ready to give whoever was standing at the door a steady string of curses.

"Bloody hell!" he said as he strode to the door.  He took off the wards and opened the door snarling.

Draco half-pushed, half-slipped into the lab oblivious to Snape's foul temper. He glanced about quickly and seeing that they were alone pushed the door shut.

"I need to talk to you."

Snape was totally appalled by Draco's pushiness. Where was the cowering? When Snape scowled people cringed! Where was the cringing!? All these questions ran through his head, and one of his eyebrows raised, probably making Draco think Snape was interested instead of flabbergasted.

"What about?" he drawled. His anger calming down after the confusion settled in.

"I want to be a double agent," Draco said in a low but hurried voice as though the words were rushing to get out. "Like you were."

Snape’s face fell instantly, and he put a silencing charm around the room.

"I told you never to talk about that boy. You could have at least warned me before talking about such things!" Snape was clearly flustered. He didn't know why. For all the boy knew, Snape was a spy for Voldemort not Dumbledore.

"Why?" Snape asked bluntly while pacing about.

"Well, you can't do it anymore, can you?" Draco continued in the same hurried voice, though he became calmer as he spoke. "But I can. I know I can. Granger was practically begging me to change sides. I was assigned to figure out the Order of the Phoenix members anyway, but I can't figure that much out from here. I want to know what they know."

"You aren't even a high ranking Death Eater yet! Voldemort won't be convinced that you're worthy without you doing something ‘extra-curricular’ to convince him." Snape was trying to think about an excuse as fast as possible.

"No, that's what's so perfect. The Order would never buy a high-ranking Death Eater, but I'm young and impressionable. A stupid, scared kid who made a mistake." Draco pressed his lips together, before letting the precious information slip. "There was a witness. The night Dumbledore died. Someone saw me hesitate. I'm not proud of it, but I can make it up this way. I can use it. I've been laying ground work." Snape thought for a moment.

"You bring up some good points," he put his hands to his face and shook his head a bit.

"When did you plan on getting approval for this?"

"I wanted to run it by you first," Draco said which was partially true. "You have experience."

"I suppose since I had to ruin my cover to finish your task the only logical thing would be for you to become the new spy." He hissed. Self-pity flooded inside. In one moth he'd lost his job, his freedom, his so-called friends, and any chance at having a life every again. At this very moment he hated the boy.

"If you're thinking it will earn you brownie points with the Dark Lord you're sorely mistaken. It's a dangerous business Draco." he said with his back to him.

Draco nodded somberly, not adding that just staying in this house struck him as “dangerous business”.

"I left something out last week. When I was talking to you. That book that mentioned Horcruxes," he paced a bit to put himself out of Snape's reach. "It was in Potter's bedroom."

Snapes brows lifted at this. He turned around to face Draco again.

"Oh really?" he inquired. "I wonder what the little brat would have - wait a second, why were you in Potters bedroom?" Snape sounded almost grossed out, with a hint of revulsion.

Oh, you know, thought Draco, a little kiss, a little cuddle. But decided these gay jokes really needed to stop before everyone got confused about him. Besides Snape was clearly in no mood to be joked with.

"Looking for information. I wasn't actually trying to hurt him, so the magic didn't keep me out."

Snape didn't know really what to say to him.

"Do you still have the book?"

"No, it was his planner. I thought he'd miss it if I took it, so I just made notes. All it said was 'What is a Horcrux?' It didn't say whether he ever found an answer, but I think I know why he was looking."

"Why would that be?" he said snarkily. Like Draco, a boy who'd barely been introduced to the Death Eaters would know what Potter was up to. Snape scoffed at this idea.

"Lord Voldemort has a Horcrux doesn't he?" Draco breathed. His voice low, but his eyes bright. "That's why he didn't die when the Avada Kedavra rebounded. Potter's looking for something, and I bet that's what it is."

Snape paused for a moment. He didn't much like where this was going.

"Get out,” he muttered.

Draco stared at Snape as though scarcely comprehending. Out? He couldn't leave. He had questions, burning, pounding thoughts that needed to get out. And he had to tell Snape, no one else could understand, no one else could answer those questions. He opened his mouth wondering what magic words would pry the answer from Snape, but then again, if Draco had been wrong, Snape would have just said so. Wouldn't he? Feeling sated an even crazier question found voice.

"Dumbledore, could he have had a Horcrux?"

Draco was watching Snape closely for a reaction, but he needn't have.

"GET OUT!" Snape roared at him with such furry that Draco retreated, but not in the direction of the door.

"No, I suppose not," Draco said quickly. "He never liked dark magic did he?" Snape was looking murderous, so Draco hurried on to other topics. "He said you worked for him. On the roof, he, he offered me protection. He said he'd hide me and my family. The witness must have heard all that, and they would have told the Order.

"It'll be simple then, I just have to tell them I want the protection Dumbledore offered. They'll know he did, and they're very sentimental about him aren't they?

"And I told Neville, that night in garden. I told him that I was trying to get caught, that why ran from you and father, in case they were looking through the windows. So they'd think I was trying to get away.

"Please, sir, help me do this. I need to; I need to know what they know."

"Why must you know these things Draco?" Snape said, quieter than before, yet still snarkily. "For the Dark Lord no doubt. But to betray him? Or help him?"

He noticed his questions seemed to make Draco a tad uneasy.

Draco dropped onto an empty chair, letting his arms fall limp on his lap. He was even whiter than usual. His pale grew eyes searched Snape for a clue on how to answer but received none.

"I don't know," he breathed so quietly Snape would have to lip read to make him out.

Snape craned his neck and pointed his ear in the direction of Draco's mouth but all he heard was an inaudible mutter.  "Speak up boy."

Draco's lips parted but no sound came out at first. When it did come, it was parched and low but audible.  "On my first train ride to Hogwarts I offered Harry Potter my hand and said I'd help him make friends. He didn't take it. And then he nearly killed me last year.

"When I was locked in Longbottom's closet, I found pictures of his parents. From before and now. I can't forget how his mother's eyes staring at me from the picture, looking but not seeing. My aunt and uncle did that to her, to them, to Neville."   Draco swallowed and tried to look Snape in the eyes but couldn't quite manage it. "So you tell me what side I should be on."

Snape stared down at Draco. A million worries running through him. What to say? Confess? Draco didn't know what he was asking of him. He was asking Snape to put his whole life at stake just for the boy.

"Do you know the dangers of being a spy? No matter who you're spying for it's a dangerous business, Malfoy. Spying for the Order would not put you in good faith with the Dark Lord, and he would not show restraint in killing a traitor," he said darkly.  He paused for a moment and looked at Draco, to see what he could see in his eyes.

"Various dangers await," he repeated in a low and calm voice.

Draco tried to read Snape's face, but it was a mask.

What remained of his enthusiasm ebbed away with Snape's words. "Of course he would kill me," Draco murmured. He got to his feet and straightened himself. "When I think about it, I really don't have a choice, do I?"

Snape stood and watched Draco absorbing his words. He didn't have much to say. If he was going to tell Draco who he was really working for, it wasn't going to be tonight.

Draco saw Snape's features twitch as he tried to read Draco's words.

"You're right," Draco said more clearly. "It was a stupid idea. I'll let you be now."

Snape began very tight-lipped and watched Draco leave his chambers. The moment he set foot outside he re-set his wards and sat down on the nearest chair, and began to ponder what he should tell Draco about. He couldn't leave the topic open next time.
