Dora Tonks stepped into O'Mally's Pub from the pouring rain
fifteen minutes before her appointed meeting time with Minerva McGonagall. Dora
wanted to have time to collect her thoughts.
It had been a long day. Dora had left London in the wee-hours of the morning
and had made her way to Scotland in hopes of tracking down some leads she had
gotten from Kingsley Shacklebolt the day before. She had spent all day
searching, asking questions, all to no avail. Needless to say Dora was not
looking forward to facing Umbridge the next day.
The small Muggle pub was crammed with people, as she knew it would be at this
time of day. Dora knew that Minerva would have picked this place over anything
else, but she couldn’t help but be a little disappointed that Minerva didn’t
want to meet at Pablo’s Taco and Chicken Hut.
“What’s your pleasure tonight, Blue?” A waitress about Dora’s age asked.
“A Pint of the house beer, and the driest martini you have.”
“Starting out a bit soon are ya? Happy hour just started.”
“The martini is for my friend, she'll be here shortly.” Dora said, and waitress
nodded and left.
The waitress brought out the two drinks right away, just as Tonks spotted none
other than the new Headmistress of Hogwarts walking into the smoked filled
room.
“Minerva!!” Tonks shouted standing up from the corner booth she had secured.
Minerva moved over to where Dora was and sat down. “I figured I might have shouted, but then again the blue hair might have given it away.”
Minerva smiled and took the drink Tonks offered. She took a
sip, and after a moment, sat back in her chair and relaxed. "Bloody hell,
I needed that," she said under her breath. Tonks heard her none the less
and laughed. Minerva looked up then replied to Tonks' previous statement,
"I don't know why I let you get away with all those hairstyles during your
school years."
Minerva watched Tonks change her hair into a bun like her own, and snorted into
her drink. "Stop that! ...I haven't nearly had enough of these. So what
brings you out this way anyhow?"
“I’m glad you asked. Well, kinda. I guess.” Tonks began to babble, but she caught herself when Minerva raised an eyebrow at her. “It’s not exactly the happiest of circumstances. The Ministry wants to know about some security measures for this coming year.” Tonks took an extra large gulp of her drink. “And I thought it’d be a good idea if I came rather than…well, someone we both hate.”
Minerva set her drink down and shut her eyes, knowing the blow was coming. "This someone from the Ministry you speak of doesn't happen to wear hideous shades of pink, stands at a whopping five foot three, and looks like a bull frog, do they?"
Dora concidered morphing into Deloris, but decided that she
might have to Avada Kedavra herself if she did.
"That's exaclty who's behind this. She's claiming she's a changed woman
and she's "worried about the childern", but somehow I don't believe
it. Anyway, it took a lot of work, but I got the clearence to come."
Minerva put her hand in her hand and rubbed her head mumbling, "Oi vay." She shut her eyes wondering what to do next, or if just to let Tonks decide anything herself.
"I didn't know you were Jewish" the words came out
before Tonks could stop them.
"I mean, we don't have to talk about this now. But I'd like to at least
tell her something." Tonks said quickly. "I hate her just as much as
you do. But if I don't say something, I'm in trouble. Have you at least made
any headway with the new Defense Against The Dark Arts Teacher? Or, Head boy or
girl?" Dora had to stop herself from babbling again, so she ordered
another pint.
Minerva sat back and finished off her martini, and she
signaled the waitress for another as she replied, "Head girl and head boy
will be chosen by the weekend. As to who, well, that's still a bit
debatable." She looked back at Tonks and leaned back and crossed her arms.
"As for the Defense teacher, I have no idea about what I'm gonna do.
Ideally, I'd want to give it back to Remus. And we both know how much he would
love to do that."
Tonks smiled, and blushed a bit as she sipped her beer.
"But unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I tried getting Kingsley,
but that was a no go." She leaned her head back and rubbed her face.
"So needless to say I'm up the creek for a moment. I just wish there was
someone I knew who was brave enough to take the position, and just for the sake
of argument, knew what they were talking about, and..."
That's when a thought came into Minerva's head, and she cut herself off. She
suddenly looked at Tonks with realization in her eyes, and the tabby cat smile
came across her face oblivious to anything else around her. She didn't even
notice her second drink had arrived.
"Minerva..." Tonks slightly scared about what Minerva might be thinking. "Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?" Tonks hoped Minerva was thinking what she was thinking.
Minerva scooted her chair closer to Tonks and she dropped
her voice to a whisper. "I have a proposition for you, and I think it'll
benefit not just Hogwarts, but the Order of the Phoenix as well."
Tonks nodded her head, listening intently.
"I want you to come on as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Tell Delores you quit," Minerva
went on, putting a discusting accent on 'Delores' as if it were a slug-like
creature that crept out of her mouth. "If you quit, you don't have to tell
the Ministry anything, other than the protection Hogwarts is getting is
yourself!"
Tonks blinked, considering the idea.
Minerva decided to seal the deal. "Besides the fact that if you also take
on the position of Head of Gryffindor House, you'll get paid more than you did
as a third year Auror."
Tonks was flabbergasted. She thougth Minerva might offer her
the DADA position, but Gryffindor Head of House too? Tonks drank deeply from
her glass and sat back toying with the idea.
She would love to take the DADA job. She felt out of all of the recent ones,
she'd be the most qualified, save perhaps for Remus. And Head Of House would be
pretty sweet, not to many troublemakers from Gryffindor, well, now that the
Weasley twins were gone. And the prospect of rubbing her resignment in
Umbridge's ugly face seemed too good to be true.
A playful half-smile came to her face.
"One question."
Minerva raised an eyebrow.
"When do I start?" Tonks couldn't hide her enthusam, she let out a
huge smile and had to restrain herself from hugging Minerva.
Minerva raised her glass to Tonks. "To many more years of Hogwarts."
Tonks raised her mug and clinked it against Minerva's with a devious smile. "And to making sure the frog gets it's tongue stuck in a trap."
The two drained their glasses, and after
a moment, Minerva got up. "Now. Let's go to Pablo's."
