Welcome to my worlds...
March 8, 2009
I've been increasing my web presence in the last few months. I started a website for my homebased business (which is making enough for me to afford insurance...yay!). The website is www.AmoebaInk.com. There you can catch a glance at Ashley's upcoming book. We're still in the editing stage, but it's very close to being shelf ready. I'm trying to figure out a system for taking pre-orders.
I've joined deviantart.com and comicspace.com as kayiscah. You can see a sneak peak at some of characters from my story "The Light Child" here. I started drawing my own comic strip diary, which I will attempt to tooncast on the front page here:
I'm still keeping up the Minimumwager Blog, trying to be more regular with it. The first agent turned the book down, but it would be pretty rare to have the book picked up by the first person you send it to. So I'm going to edit a few things and try again. I'm tempted to try self-publishing. It would be faster, but self-publshing has it's downside too.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I was hoping to channel everyone to my Minimumwager Blog. The book is being reviewed by an agent right now, which is both exciting and nerve racking. While I'm waiting I'm helping Ashley get ready for a major launch. We've had her characters under lock and key for far too long, so I'm excited about getting them ready to share with the public. We're going the self-publishing route with Ashley's comic. Planning to use comixpress.com for our initial run and self promote until a larger company takes an interest.
2008 was an interesting year for me. I caught the business bug. In November of 2008 I officially started a home business. I'm planning to incorporate early this year, so I can umbrella my creative pursuits under it as well. A start up comic book company I tried to write something for ages ago, died for a while, but they're making another go at it. So I'm going to make an effort to finish the project I started with them.

It's been a very busy Fall. I'm teaching again. My co-writer and I have started a blog to promote our budgetting book The Minimum Wager. We're field testing some of our financial theories to see how well they work off paper and in real life. So far, so good. Come check it out and give us your feedback. The book itself we're hoping to have finished by January.

Ugh. It's been an unusually hot summer, and I shut down creatively. My co-writer and I got up through Chapter 7 and then hit a series of snags, which range from work issues to stolen laptops to flat out heat induced lethargy. Happily fall is here, we're taking a little time to get our employment situations sorted out, but we still have high hopes of finishing the book this year. What I have accomplished is some research for our book, most recently I've been reading up on the food pyramid and investing. (Yes, they're connected, but you'll have to read the book to see how.) Tonight we discussed some short video segments we may do as part of our book promotion...but one step at time. We have to focus on writing the book before we worry about promoting it.

It's so easy to get distracted. Doesn't feel like I've accomplished much this past month. Got caught up dealing with family/house issues and had trouble keeping focus on my writing projects. Even so, the book continues to inch forward. My co-writer has sent me chapter 5 and had every hope of getting 6 done today. He's had more chaos than I have, so he certainly deserves applause for that. Keep us in your prayers.

After many tears and trials legal copies of Illustrator and InDesign have been attained. I'm all set technology wise, but naturally Ashley's computer is now in the shop. Oh well, thank goodness for warranties. The font is working fine since I've got the Mac upgraded to OS X, and I've started doing lettering. The nonfiction book boasts 3 written chapters, so we're making good progress. Had a set back this week due to illness, but we still have a chance of making our July deadline. I do miss writing fiction, but I've had trouble getting in the right mental place for it. I'll definitely get back to it before the year is out.

It appears that I do infact need sleep, or at least I need days off. It's been an interesting month. Went to Dallas for a weekend and decided to quit the new job. Picking up my last paycheck today. It was not a bad job, but I realized I needed time for my various writing projects. I'm still employed, only part-time rather than full-time plus. I was all ready to put a lot of time into Ashley's comic, but we're having some issues with the font, so I'm haunting ebay and trying to pick up a more recent (and legal) copy of Illustrator.

Finally got some art up. I got that job I interviewed for. Not sure how I'm going to juggle it with all my other projects, but I'll manage somehow. Who needs sleep, right? Somewhere in this busy month, we got Photoshop for Ashley. Trying to transfer all the comic book files off my computer onto hers. Hopefully, we'll be back on track soon. Have a friend making a font for us. The nonfiction book is still creeping along as well. My friend and I are a bit annoyed that we haven't made more progress, but we are making progress. The book's basically outlined. We just have to start filling in the chapters.

Trying a new, simpler design for the portfolio. This gives me an opportunity to get some of my art up, which should be nice. I had an interview today. I'm not sure what will come of it, but it got me thinking a lot about professionalism and the balance between presentation and substance. I think I must aim to be lacking in neither.
