Neville had finished his
dinner as quickly as possible and had already made his way up to the Room of
Requirement. He assumed that Ron and Hermione were still downstairs, enjoying
their delicious meal, but Neville hadn't enjoyed his dinner since McGonagall
had returned to Hogwarts. He had been meaning to speak with her for weeks, but
now that she was here, he realized that he had to speak with Ron and Hermione first.
He needed some information from them and he hoped they would tell him more than
he already knew.
The Room of Requirement was furnished with two dark green couches and a glass
coffee table on which there were chocolate mints, a pitcher of water and glasses.
Neville made himself comfortable on one of the couches and waited for Hermione
and Ron to arrive.
Hermione finished her dinner eager to find out
what Neville had to say to her. She walked, practically ran, to the Room of Requirement
and opened the door to find Neville sitting on the couch.
She sat down on the couch across from Neville, almost out of breath, and
managed to get out a "Ron’s not here yet? I wonder where he is."
Ron walked up to the corridor that housed the
Room of Requirement and made his way to the wall where the door would be. After
pacing, the door appeared and Ron walked in, eyes scanning the room.
"Sorry I'm a little late," he shrugged. Sitting down beside Hermione,
Ron looked up at Neville. "What's going on?"
Neville looked at them both very seriously
before he spoke. "Thank you for
agreeing to meet me here," he started. "This meeting is very
important to me and you will soon find out why." He stopped to pour himself a glass of water before he continued. "Remember over the summer when I wrote
a journal entry talking about a strange dream I've been having? Well, I am
planning on talking to McGonagall about it, and I'm hoping she'll be able to
help me. But first, I need to get some information from you...about
Voldemort."
She look at Neville and said, "Well…you’ve
come to the right people I guess. We
may not know everything at the moment, but we can tell you what we know." She
took a deep breath in and sighed it out, waiting for what Neville had to ask.
"Alright, when I was at Bill and Fleur's
wedding, I had a talk with Harry about my dream. I asked him what it could mean
and if he really thought that Voldemort is looking for me. He told me all about
this prophecy that was made and how I fit the description of the person in the
prophecy just as well as he does, but he didn't tell me much more. I don't know
if he didn't want me to know or if he just didn't want to talk about it at the
moment. But he did tell me that you both know about all this and that I should
speak with McGonagall about the dream."
He stopped to take a few sips of water while he waited for them to process all
this information.
"So basically, if you're not sworn to
secrecy or anything, I was wondering if you could tell me as much as possible
about the prophecy and anything else that could be of importance before I go
and talk to McGonagall."
It took Hermione a few moments to gather her
thoughts.
"To this day, the whole prophecy still confuses me. But from what I know,
and remember…Ron correct me if I’m wrong, but before you and Harry were born,
Professor Trelawney had .. I don’t know how to explain it…foresaw? predicted?
that a boy will be born to be Voldemort’s equal. One cannot live while the
other survives…either must die at the hand of the other…" Hermione stared
off into space with a confused look on her face trying her hardest to remember
"...the one with the power to kill the dark lord will be born as the
seventh month dies... Meaning the end of July. Both you and Harry’s parents
were members of the order…escaped the dark lord three times and were born at
the end of July…so it was hard to figure out which one of you had ‘the power’.But
we know for sure now that it is Harry...apparently." What more could
Hermione say? "I don’t know if that made sense to you…tell me if it didn’t...I’ll
put it into easier words"
Hermione looked at Neville hoping she had explained it well, it was the best
she could.
"Hold on a minute!" replied Neville.
"Harry didn't tell me anything about one not living while the other
survives. So basically by the end of this war, either Voldemort or Harry will
be dead?"
He didn't wait for Ron or Hermione to answer him. He just continued with his
thought process.
"How do we know for sure that Harry is the one that the prophecy was
talking about? What if it's talking about me? And if it is... then that's why
Voldemort is after me. It makes perfect sense, doesn't it?"
"Well, I’m not sure exactly how we know.
Possibly because Harry got his brother wand…possibly because Voldemort has been
out more for him than he has you. This dream doesn’t necessarily have to mean
that he is out to get you. But it’s always okay to get it checked out right?"
Hermione said. She had forgotten the question Neville had asked before. She
slumped into the couch and said, "Yes, I’m afraid one of them will be dead
at the end of this."
Neville's eyes opened wide when Hermione
confirmed that either Voldemort or Harry had to die. "If Harry has to kill Voldemort, why is he here at Hogwarts?
Why isn't he out there hunting Voldemort down so that he can kill him and we
can get this war over with?"
"Well…I dunno," Hermione even
questioned herself as to why they weren’t gone. "We’re not sure what were
going to do yet. We can’t just leave Hogwarts and go wherever we want expecting
to find him."
Neville sighed as he refilled his glass with
more water. "I know," he said
in a frustrated tone. "It's just that people are dying or getting tortured
all the time, and if Harry is the only one who can stop it... I just wish he
would stop it already. I know it's a lot easier said than done, and that he's
probably feeling a ton of pressure right now. So what can I do to help?"
"I understand completely Neville, I feel
the same way." Hermione tried to think of another way she could explain
this situation to him. "Did Harry ever tell you about the Horcruxes?"
"About the what?" he asked. Just when he felt he was finally starting to
understand the whole situation, he found himself thoroughly confused again. "What are horcruxes?"
"Horcruxes are as hard to explain as they
are to understand so forgive me if I don’t give you exactly the answer as to
what they are." Hermione scratched her head and said, "Horcrux is a
word used for an object in which a person has concealed part of their soul.
Basically, you split your soul and put in into an inanimate object and hide the
object. Then, if your body is attacked or destroyed you cannot die, because
part of your soul is still alive in the Horcrux. You can perform this by committing
murder because murder rips the soul apart. Now, most wizards only do this once
to tear their soul in two. But Voldemort…he did it not once, but seven times.
Six actually, one being his body. So before we can kill Voldemort himself, we
have to destroy all the Horcruxes first. Two have already been destroyed; Marvolo’s
ring and the diary."
"Seven? His soul is split into seven
pieces? This could take years! Do most people know about this? Do we have Order
members or people from the Ministry looking for these Horcruxes? I want to
help. What can I do?"
"Woah…slow down Neville. We have an idea of
what the other four are. So we must destroy those too. You can help by being
patient for me okay? I’ve been meaning to talk to Harry about our plans lately,
but Ron has been busy, and Harry hasn’t really been himself lately. But I’ve
been having thoughts about how were going to do this and I promise, I
promise, that I will find a way you can help Harry out. You have helped us
out so much in the past six years, there’s no way we could leave you out
okay?"
Neville calmed down a bit. He felt foolish for
reacting the way he did. If Hermione was being calm about all this, surely he
didn't have to be as worried as he was.
"Sorry, I'm just worried about the outcome of this war, and how my dream
ties into all of this. But as long as you let me help out eventually, I guess
there's nothing more I can do. Except talk to McGonagall. Does she know about
all this, by the way?"
"Well, I doubt that McGonagall knows exactly
everything, but I think she knows that Dumbledore gave Harry a mission and we
can leave whenever needed."
"But does McGonagall at least know about
the prophecy?" he asked. "I just don't want to mess up and tell her
something that I was supposed to have kept a secret."
"I’m not sure…she might. Dumbledore has
known about the prophet since around the time Harry was born. But he just didn’t
manage to get around to telling him about it until fifth year."

Draco sat staring rather blankly at the
wireless. Franklin was sleeping on his cot, and he felt about ready to drift
off himself when Longbottom mentioned Voldemort.
Well.. you’ve come to the right people I guess...we may not know everything
at the moment but...we can tell you what we know. Came Granger's voice, and
Draco perked up. He gave Franklin an anxious glance. The other wizard hadn't
stirred, but Draco decided not to take chances. He cast a non-verbal Muffliato
on the sleeping wizard and turned the wireless as low as he could and still
hear it clearly.
Draco's eyes grew wide, and his mouth fell open as he listened. He had asked
Mr. Weasley to wait a few days before taking the watch away, after all how
likely was it that Neville would overhear something important. Stupid he
berated himself. Still he was rather glad he had asked, this was
interesting...still if Franklin had been awake...Draco tried not to think about
it.
"Six," he repeated anxiously after Hermione explained the Horcruxes. Two
down. Still, that left four.... Draco bit back a whimper. This could
take forever.
