Now Draco had a wand. It was a good wand. Even under duress, Ollivander never did shoddy work.
Draco took his new wand out for spin the evening after he had gotten it. He went alone, and he didn't tell anyone where he was going. Well, he told Uncle Rodolphus to relay to Aunt Bellatrix that he was going down to the pub to stretch his legs, but he had no idea how long that message would take to actually reach someone who cared.
Once he had walked out of sight of the house, he apparated in short jumps to Newbury where the Creevey's lived. Draco walked down a very Muggle street and stopped at a quaint little house with yellow siding. He stepped up on the small front porch and knocked.
A woman with long brown hair pulled back in a ponytail and bright eyes, wide eyes that explained Colin's opened the door. "Hallo," she said, looking Draco over quickly. "Are you here to see Colin?"
"Yes," Draco said pleasantly. "We go to school together."
"Oh!" the woman said flinging the door open. "Come in! Come in! We've never had visitors from Colin's school before. We've only seen photos. This is very exciting. Would like some tea?"
"That would be lovely," Draco said and stepped inside.
"Colin! Dennis!" the woman called. "See who’s come!"
Colin and Dennis ran down the stairs. They rarely got visitors there. His camera bounced around his chest as he hoped the stairs two by two.
"Oh. Hello," he said rather dumbfounded. He barely knew the kids name. Only that he was in Slytherin, and that he and Harry didn't get along very well.
The Creevey brothers came bursting into the room. To the slight wounding of Draco's pride, Colin did not seem to be impressed by his presence. Dennis on the other hand had gone rather white and was urgently tugging at his brother’s sleeve.
"Hello, Colin," Draco said, ignoring Dennis and extending his hand to the older brother. "I had this idea about starting a school paper, and I thought you might want to get in on it."
Colin gave his brother a little shove with his elbow. What was his problem anyways?
"Why I'd love to! But I'm sorry, I can't place your name..." he frowned.
Ouch! My ego! thought Draco. "Draco," he said. "Draco Malfoy. Do you mind if we wizards talk somewhere privately? I'd rather not involve any adults at the moment." He let his eyes flicker in the direction of Colin's mother who was watching with great interest from the door way.
"I suppose..." He said nervously, giving his mum a weak smile. He'd heard people talking about the Malfoys all summer. Especially about the Death Eater Lucius escaping from Azkaban. They couldn't be related could they? he asked himself.
"Bugger off Dennis!" Colin said. With agitation clearly floating in his voice. He and his brother always got along, but his excessive pulling on his arm was beginning to get on his nerves.
“Let's go upstairs." Colin suggested. Leading Draco up the stairs.
"Why don't we let Dennis come?" Draco said. "He might be interested in this too." Dennis Creevey had already been edging towards his mother. Draco beckoned him to follow, and Dennis seemed too frightened to not obey. He hurried up the stairs past Draco to stand on Colins heels.
"C-colin," he gasped frantically.
Once they got into Colin’s room, he turned around to face Denis. "What?" he asked lightly. He was staring down at his camera and began to fiddle with it. He was going to take a picture of the three of them...
Draco felt he might as well get on with the plan, now that he didn't have any witnesses. He pointed his wand at Dennis first since Colin was fiddling with the camera. He spoke softly but forcefully.
"Imperio!" and Dennis became still. Colin looked up from his camera in alarm but did not have a chance to think about drawing his wand before Draco pointed at him too. "Imperio!"
Lucius Malfoy had been a natural at the Imperius Curse, and Draco had inherited his talent. Still, he had never cursed two people at the same time before. The Imperius curse created a subtle link between the caster and the victim. The hum of two minds touching his was a bit imposing, so Draco decided to start with a simple command. "Sit down," he said.
Colin and Dennis had a seat on the bed. Draco sank down onto a small chair
in relief. He tried to pick out the two different mental hums from one another.
This was probably more difficult because the Creevey's were brothers and close
ones at that. Finally though, he believed he had Colin's sorted out from
Dennis's.
"Okay, Colin. You really want to start a school newspaper this year, and
you think it would be a fantastic opening story to get an interview with
Longbottom about his capture of Draco Malfoy." It was not necessary to
verbalize commands when using the Imperius curse, but it made it a little
easier for Draco to focus. "Tomorrow morning catch the Knight Bus to
Longbottom's Hollow. Neville should be there. Let him tell you all about it.
Then ask if you can take his picture. Ask is he still has Draco's wand. Ask if you can see it. Take his picture with
it. Make a pleasant day of it. Stay chat with him for as long as you can, ask to
see grounds, just kill time.
"Dennis," Draco switched his mental track. It was drawing business, keeping up an Imperius Curse. Maintaining contact with Rosmerta all last year had nearly drained Draco dry. This was more difficult, but hopefully not as long term. "You should go with your brother tomorrow. Once you know where it is, keep your eye open for an opportunity to retrieve the wand without Neville noticing. After you have it, send it back to me. It's very important that I get that wand back. Not important enough to hurt someone, but important enough to be tricky about it. You can never tell anyone, but you will be doing a great service to the Order in getting that wand back. Understand?"
Both boys nodded.
"Excellent," Draco said. "You best see me out. Tell, your mum I was sorry I couldn't stay for tea."
Colin and Dennis saw Draco out the front door. He walked down the Muggle street until he found a nice quiet spot to dissapperate from.
Colin and Dennis watched blankly as Draco left. That was weird, he thought.
"Well. I'm up for tea!" Colin said cheerily.
They made their way down the stairs again, and greeted their Mum in the kitchen. The three of them had a nice cup of tea, and Colin talked excitedly about the school newspaper he was going to start. He told his Mum how sorry Draco was for not being able to stay for tea, and then went outside and took some pictures of clouds.
