Having sent the owl carrying Draco's new wand to him, Lucius felt himself retrace the familiar path which he had walked several days earlier and stopped before the still large and imposing door to Snape's chambers. Shifting the bottle of fire-whiskey beneath one arm, Lucius raised his cane and knocked three times upon his friend's door. It certainly was not in a Malfoy's nature to make peace and yet the favor which Snape had done for him in helping to find Draco was not one which Lucius would quickly forget. Since that morning a quick 'visit' to Ollivander in the dungeons had drastically improved Lucius' mood, and he almost felt like humming as he stood waiting for Severus to respond.
Severus heard some knocking on his door only moments after
Draco had left and he had put up new wards. A fiery rage boiled inside him at
this.
Leaving his chair with a feral growl, he ran to the door snarling and took off the wards. He flung open the door and yelled at who he had thought it had been Draco.
"I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE!” When he opened his eyes, he found it was nothing but Lucius.
Lucius couldn't help but wonder who Snape thought he was
shouting at, Bellatrix no doubt, but rather than become annoyed with his
friend's almost constant foul mood he simply smiled.
"Expecting someone else, Severus?" Lucius thrust the bottle of fire-whiskey towards his friend, knowing this particular vintage to be one of Snape's favorite. “Perhaps this will help cure that foul temper of yours."
Startled at finding someone different Severus lowered his
brows, and shut his mouth. Still looking foully, he accepted the bottle and
took a drink. Afterwards he raised the bottle in a sort of cheer. He wasn't
about to thank Lucius, nor apologize for that matter. So cheers would have to
do.
"Come in." he said darkly. "What is it you wish to speak about?"
Lucius smiled and followed Severus into his darkened
chambers, hearing the door close behind them. Somehow Snape had managed to
recreate the feel of his dungeons in Hogwarts perfectly and he only wished that
Narcissa had been able to transfer the Manor here as effectively.
"Can't an old friend stop in for a drink, Severus?" Lucius put on what he thought to be his most charming smile and motioned towards the bottle. "Consider it to be in appreciation for your friendship. And your assistance in rescuing Draco." He added, and then paused for effect. Twitching the end of his cane, Lucius spoke: "Accio goblets." Immediately two goblets flew towards them, Lucius catching them both and laying them down upon one of Snape's side tables. "Come, be civilized, Severus. We aren't Weasleys drinking imitation wine straight from the bottles."
Snape felt sheepish about being so crude. He chuckled when Lucius made reference to the Weasleys. He could see it now. Hell, he'd seen them do it at Order of the Phoenix meetings! He poured Lucius and himself a shot of whiskey each.
"Hopefully, Draco can stay out of trouble from here on out. I'd hate to put a restriction on the boy." he said casually. Afterwards he downed his shot, feeling the liquid burn his throat on the way down.
"Yes, as do I." Lucius joined Severus in pouring
the fiery liquid down his throat, after which he replaced his glass to the
table, hoping that Severus would bestow a second shot upon him. His friend did
and the second shot immediately joined the first as it slid down his throat.
After a moment spent enjoying the taste, Lucius turned and sat within one of
the large chairs which rested near them, motioning towards one of the other
seats in an invitation to Snape to do the same.
"Severus, tell me about my son's performance last year."
Snape was downing his second shot when Lucius asked him about the school year. Something he was really hoping to never have to discuss. He took the bottle of firewiskey and his cup and sat down on the chair. He took his time replying, he filled his cup with another shot worth of whiskey.
"He was hesitant. But I believe he tried to fulfill the Dark Lord's wishes to the best of his ability." he drawled.
Lucius nodded, unable to help the slight frown that rose to his features as he was reminded of his son's hesitation.
"Yes, of course." This was something he well knew
and although Lucius couldn't ignore that fact, he also admitted that Draco had
done a stellar job getting the Dark Lord's followers into Hogwarts.
Not wishing to have yet another argument with Severus, Lucius shifted the subject to that which he was really curious about.
"But the other night he was so . . . outspoken. I have never seen him so confident." Lucius pushed his goblet towards Snape in the 'subtle' request for more of the whiskey. This was, after all, a subject which required at least a little liquid courage for both men. "He must have changed a lot last year." What he had meant to say was improved, but somehow this praise was blocked, as much of his intended praise for Draco tended to be.
Severus noticed Lucius holding his goblet away from him, and
figured he was in need of a refill. He did so, filling it up a little higher
than usual, his arm would fall off if he had to continue raising the heavy jug
every 30 seconds.
"Aye, it was unexpected. I've never known him to be
disrespectable."
His head was beginning to swim from the whiskey. He felt his
muscles relax, and suddenly felt calmer.
Snape sloppily downed another sip. Coughing a tad from the
burning, but not loudly enough to seem foolish.
"He must have changed more recently. He was normal at school."
Lucius enjoyed the larger goblet-full slowly, now that he was beginning to feel warm from his first few shots and smiled to Severus in thanks.
"Disrespectful . . . yes." He paused, and then added. "Disrespectful but, my goodness I was proud of the boy. Standing up for himself like that and finally showing his Malfoy blood." Part of Lucius' brain was wondering what had ever induced him to admit that, but a glance into his glass before the amber liquid burned down his throat answered that question. "Perhaps I should have brought him into the Death Eaters earlier if this was the result."
Severus watched as the fire flickered on the side of
Lucius's features. He truly was a scary looking man, and could understand why
so many were frightened of him. He had extremely bold features, and his eyes
reflected dark thoughts.
"Perhaps..." he considered what to say next. He didn't want Lucius to get angry. Especially not while tipsy. "I think the boy came at the right time, he certainly had a knack for killing the Muggles the other week."
“A compliment... he'll eat that up”. He thought slyly. A slight smirk playing at the corners of his mouth at the joke he shared with himself.
Lucius smiled at the memory of the meeting a few weeks ago.
"Was he? I'm afraid I lost track of him." He took
another sip of his whiskey. "That's good to know."
Lucius looked up at Severus, who was watching him with an implacable expression upon his face.
"I haven't been back to any of our old 'haunts' in a while, Severus. I do hope they're still standing." Lucius chuckled at the memory of he and Snape's previous amorous adventures through some of the houses of ill-repute which were scattered around London and was glad to see the expression fade from his friend's countenance.
"That would be a shame if they weren't." a smirk
now fully showing.
"What made you think of that Lucius?" he said, downing another gulp of the whiskey.
“Is this my... fifth shot? Wait no... No... Must be my sixth.” Snape thought. He poured himself another shot, spilling a little over the side and onto his lap. A flick of his wand and it was dry and clean again. He held out the whiskey as an offering for Lucius.
Lucius thrust his goblet forward and gladly accepted a refill, trying to hold his glass steady to allow the certainly unsteady Snape fill it.
"Well, I've been free for a few weeks now I've just been thinking about getting my feet wet." He swallowed a mouthful of whiskey, running his hand over the velvet of his jacket appreciatively.
"Ash... when were you planning on... as you said, getting your feet wet?" Severus tried to ask as if he were uninterested. Never mind wanted to go with him. It'd been a long while for Severus in that department.
Lucius chuckled, knowing that Snape would be as eager as he
to retrace their old stomping ground. Perhaps more eager, considering that
Severus was unmarried.
"I'm not particular." Lucius grinned. "Narcissa does keep me busy, but shall we say next week sometime?"
"I'll be sure to get back to you on that." he
drawled. His words clearly slurring. He didn't care... much. He took another
gulp of his whiskey. They'd successfully drank half the contents in the few
hours they'd spent in each others company that evening. He got the feeling the
bottle would be empty when the night came to an end.
They continued to discuss Draco, his attitude change, his
new assignment, and began to plan their trip into town. It was decided the 8th
would be as good a day as any for them.
Both of them were sunken into their chairs, their head lolled off to the side, and fast asleep by the time the contents of the fire whiskey were gone. The fire died down, and they greeted the wee hours of the evening, subconsciously dreading the morning. But he had plenty of hangover relief potions to clear that mess up in a jiffy.
